How to Power Your Golf Swing...Why Thoracic Rotation is so Important!

July 10, 20243 min read

Why is thoracic rotation important for your golf swing?

Thoracic rotation plays a critical role in the golf swing due to its significant impact on both power and consistency. The thoracic spine, which comprises the upper and middle sections of the back, is designed to have a greater rotational capacity compared to the lumbar spine (lower back).

The lumbar spine is made for flexion and extension (bending over and arching the back), not rotation. However, because of stiffness in our thoracic spines, our low-back takes the brunt of rotation.

When a golfer engages in proper thoracic rotation:

Power and Distance:

The rotation of the thoracic spine allows golfers to achieve a fuller backswing, which translates to a more significant coil between the upper and lower body. This coil stores potential energy, and when uncoiled during the downswing, it results in greater clubhead speed, hence generating more power and distance.

Consistency:

Proper thoracic rotation aids in keeping the club on the correct swing plane. This promotes more consistent ball-striking by reducing the chances of the club approaching the ball from too steep or too shallow an angle.

Reduction in Injury Risk:

Relying on the thoracic spine for rotation, instead of the lumbar spine, helps reduce the risk of lower back injuries. The lumbar spine isn't designed for the same degree of rotation as the thoracic spine, so over-relying on it can lead to undue strain and potential injury.

Improved Swing Balance:

Engaging the thoracic spine during the swing helps in maintaining a better balance, ensuring that the golfer remains stable throughout the swing. This stability is vital for consistent ball striking and overall swing efficiency.

False sense of rotation:

It's easy for us to get a false sense of rotation. We can put a golf club in our hands or a dowel and start rotation. The only problem is, our shoulders and arms are doing the "rotating", not our thoracic spine.

Drill:

Get in front of a mirror with your golf club. Have your arms shoulder height, arms straight out. Start to rotate to the right. Does your back get stuck? Do your arms keep going? Guess what...that's a false sense of rotation. You were done rotating when your back got stuck.

This is where the TrueTurnPro will make a HUGE difference for you in the long run.
