We all can get into an exercise rut now and again. If you find yourself thinking “exercise is boring” or you just don’t like exercise, these could be some of the reasons you’re not a fan. It’s time for you to be a fan of exercise! Maybe you don’t like the word “exercise.” OK…let’s change it “Movement.” Or come up with a motivating word that will get you excited about exercise! How can we overcome the top 8 workout mistakes?

What are These Top 8 Workout Mistakes?
1. Too Much to Soon
Congratulation on wanting to start an exercise routine. Your body will thank you endlessly! At the same time, make sure you aren’t doing too much too soon and becoming that weekend warrior. A big mistake people make is thinking…”I’ll workout 5 days/week”. That is a great goal, however, if you haven’t been working out 5 days/week, you may be setting yourself up for failure. Start smaller with 3 days/week and make sure you put you workout schedule into your calendar.
2. Same Workout All the Time
Variety is the spice of life! Your workouts should be as well. Make your workouts FUN! You are correct, hopping on the same treadmill or elliptical, doing the same weight routine gets BORING. Your body also thinks so and that’s why you reach plateaus. Change your workout routine up and go for a hike, get into the pool, or do a different type of weight workout.
3. Thinking Exercise Takes Too Long
Many people think they need an entire hour for an exercise routine. If you don’t have that kind of time each day, that is OK! You can do some kick-butt workouts in 15-20 minutes and walk away feeling GREAT! There are HIIT workouts, AMRAP workouts, circuits etc that will give you a cardio workout along with weight training. All in 15-20 minutes. We ALL have 15-20 minutes in our day for ourselves! If you don’t think this is possible, check out the JT Fitness and Golf 90 Day Body Challenge or the Membership Site! All sorts of workouts available to you.
4. Out of Sync with Your Body
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! So many people ignore what their body is telling them. There are some days you will kick butt and take names with your workout. Other days…not so much. IT’S FINE! Now, on those days when you aren’t feeling like working out because you are being a little lazy, that’s the time to do at least 15 minutes of SOMETHING. You will feel better! PROMISE!
5. Not Socializing
Make working out a social event! First, this makes your workouts a ton more fun and it’s going to keep you motivated while giving you variety. Meet your friends for a hike, go to a fitness class, water walk, or go for a walk/jog. Find other people who love what you do! There is a great website called MeetUp. (Nope, not a dating site). You can find lots of groups of people with your same interests. Get out and make your workouts more social.
6. Are You Having Fun Yet?
In gradeschool, I LOVED recess! I got to get outside, get some fresh air, run around and get some movement in my life. Get back to the days when you loved to run around and have fun. Of course, we don’t have to run, we can walk :). When you make exercise fun, you’ll look forward to it instead of thinking that it’s work.
7. Thinking Cardio is Enough
Cardio is great, however, we lose muscle mass starting at the age of 30. If we want to maintain our balance and strength, you want to include strength training. Strength training also increases your metabolism and we all want to be calorie burning machines! If you aren’t strength training on a regular basis or doing the same 5 exercises…let’s connect! I love to make strength training fun! Check out the Membership site or the 90 Day Programs that we offer.
8. Excuses Galore!
It’s time to stop the excuses. Yes, we all get busy and our day can get away from us, however, we can’t let that happen each and every day (that’s actually another issue). Think about how GREAT you feel when you get a workout in! Even if it’s a shorter one, there is NEVER a bad workout.
