Hello Coeur d’Alene, ID (CDA). The Thornton Cup continues – Rounds 5-7 (10 round Matchplay). If you missed the first leg of our trip in Park City, UT, click here. Warning…lots of pictures in this post.
Golf is such a funny, challenging, and humbling sport. It’s no wonder, only a few truly make it to the pros and then they even have their days!!
This is our first long road trip ever, so we’ve learned a couple of things so far.
Since you are DRIVING, it is OK to overpack a few items. Even though we watched the temperatures for weeks to make sure we have enough clothes and the right types of clothes, we still didn’t pack correctly.
It is OK to bring some pants even when you think you won’t need them. When you live in Scottsdale, it’s hard to remember, not every place is as warm as AZ in the summer. When you have wind and a 40-50 degree difference in temperature, you’ll be a bit chilled.
Bring pants and warmer tops. Maybe even a vest. You just never know when you’ll need it.
Back to golf!! We played 3 great courses in the CDA area.
Welcome to much cooler weather for today! It is supposed to be in the mid-70’s while we are here! Not today!
The cooler weather is welcomed at the same time, dressing appropriately is vital! Thank God the Proshop has plenty of clothes to choose from because I didn’t bring cooler weather clothing (including being windy).
CDA Resort Course has a couple of interesting things about it:
- This was a first for me…the driving range being water! Very different to be hitting into, but kind of cool.
- A floating green! (I really wish I was playing better to have played this hole better). Roy did par, me…not so much. I did at least make it into a bunker. It still went downhill from there.
Matt was our forecaddie today (required when you are a guest) for our foursome. And we were partnered with 2 fun guys.
Beautiful course and challenging.
Golf definitely humbled me today. I’ve been playing well for quite some time and today…well, I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn if I tried! Usually something works, like hitting my driver well, or my irons well or maybe even putting well. Nope…nadda. None of my clubs decided to work today.
Glad Roy played well.
Today’s Round: Roy +6
Overall Thornton Cup: Janis +8
Today HAS to be a better day of golf for me. Roy and I use GHIN to determine our strokes for the day. Well, today we are playing straight up! Better put my big girl pants on today!
Another beautiful course and highly recommend Circling Raven. The Symetra Tour plays here next week so the course is in FANTASTIC shape. We did get an extra walk in since it is cart path only. It is worth it!
I was down 2 going into 17. Happened to sink a 30’ for birdie to win the hole and then on 18, sunk a 20’ for par to win that hole! Nice way to come back.
Today’s Round: EVEN
Overall Thornton Cup: Janis +8
Glad my golf game decided to come back!
Everybody we told we’re playing The Idaho Club, here are some of the responses we got:
“That place is so hard,” ”The greens are impossible” or “I’ll never play there again” type comments.
This is another beautiful course. I will say…it is HARD! The greens are hard to read and they have tons of undulations with 2-3 tiers.
Bring lots of golf balls. There is water on 15 of 18 holes and this course is much tighter. You most likely won’t find your ball in the taller grasses etc. Stay down the middle or rough.
This course you definitely want to play yardage appropriate tees. The starter will tell the guys about the great blue/white combo. If you are not a big hitter or consistently straight, play the blue/white combo.
Ladies: If you can hit a long ball, play the whites (5700 yards, 74.2/142). You’ll be able to make the carries. There are a lot of long carries. If you don’t have a long ball, play the reds. (4800 yards; 69.1/128).
Thornton Cup Update:Today’s Round: Janis +1
Overall Thornton Cup: Janis +9
Roy did make a huge comeback on the back. I was up +4 and he brought it back to +1.
We can say…we most likely won’t be coming back to this course to play again. Glad we played it once…however….
CDA has been a blast. Beautiful town with lots of fun places to eat downtown. We will be back to visit CDA again!
Whitefish, MT….here we come!
